MM just jumped 17 00 .5 in the AAA VA state meet at GMU. Cleared it on the first attempt with room to spare. He then took it to 17 7 and had a very close 1st attempt but died on the last two. Its his Indoor PR and puts him 2nd in the nation.

*Also my boy David Newkirk got 2nd at 14 feet :D

That makes 4 high school boys taking shots at Pat Manson's record. Impressive!

Funny that a clearance of 17'7 would have given him a national record by half an inch, but only given him a school record by 1 inch

LoJo jumped 17'6 for Breat Bridge High School in the early 90s

Michael Morrison, a pole vaulter from Great Bridge High in Chesapeake, created the biggest buzz in the meet's opening day. He set a meet record by jumping 16-2, but didn't stop there.

He went on to clear 16-6, then jacked the bar up to 17 feet, 1/2 inch, which he got over on his first attempt. He finally missed all three attempts at 17-7, which would have set the national high school record. The high school record is 17-61/2, which Pat Manson set in 1986 in Colorado. Morrison is clearly in elite company. His 17-foot vault was the second best in the nation this year, behind an effort of 17-31/2 by Spencer McCorkle of Bryant, Ark. The vaults by Morrison and McCorkle are the nation's best by high school athletes since 1999.

Indoors or not, there have been some indoor HS 17 footers since 1999.
