Oconee's Scott fifth at world meet
Marrakech, Morocco - Oconee County state champion pole vaulter Jordan Scott placed fifth at the IAAF World Youth Championships on Sunday.
Scott, who earned a spot on the 15-man Team USA roster with a top-eight finish at last summer's USATF National Junior Olympics, cleared 5.05 meters (16.57 feet), but failed on all three of his attempts at 5.10 (16.73).
Yansheng Yang from China and Scott Roth of Granite Bay, Calif., cleared a new meet-record height of 5.25 meters (17.22 feet) to take the gold and silver medals in the boys' Pole Vault. Both athletes failed at 5.30 (17.39), but Yang won the gold because he cleared 5.25 on his first try.
Albert Velez of Spain cleared 5.20 (17.06) to place third.

Marrakech, Morocco - Oconee County state champion pole vaulter Jordan Scott placed fifth at the IAAF World Youth Championships on Sunday.

Both Roth and Yang cleared 5.25m/17-2.75 to set a World Youth championship record in the boys' pole vault with Scott grabbing the silver medal because he had more misses than Yang. Jordan Scott of Watkinsville, Ga., finished in fifth-place with a clearance of 5.05m/ 16-6.75 in the boys' pole vault final.

Roth and Yansheng Yang of China both cleared 17-2 3/4, but Yang won the gold on fewer misses. Both missed three attempts at 17-4 1/2.
The World Youth Championships are for athletes younger than 18.
Roth, a two-time state pole vault champion, will be a senior at Granite Bay this fall.
