All I can say is that in Maryland, the total number of misses throughout the competition is never used as a tiebreaker...

Well, I know some USATF level officials from Maryland and I'll bet if you said that to them they would say to you that you are incorrect.

The procedure/rule for resolving ties in the vertical jumps is the same in all rule codes.. IAAF, USATF (all levels), NCAA and NFHS.
What those before this post have said to you is correct. Total misses through-out the competition are part of the TB procedure.

I think when it comes to the rules i would listen to what vaultref has to say. Hence the name. Even if you have seen it happen differently, I would assume the official messed up, not that the rules are different in your state.

On a kind of different note, i dont like the idea of passing 3 bars before you get a runthrough. How about anyone who waits more than a set time period (ex. 45 minutes) gets a runthrough when they come in? This way if there are 30 kids at opening hieght and it takes 1 1/2 hours, you still get a runthrough at height #2. Maybe there is a reason they dont do this, but i think they should. You might argue that it slows the meet down, but it works the other way too. If there are 10 vaulters in competition and you only wait 15 minutes for 4 bars to go by, you shouldnt need a runthrough. :)
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph

The college rules are different. I think it is 1 hour and then you get a run through.

That would be correct.
NCAA rules actually allow 2 minutes of runway use (per jumper) to do as many run throughs or whatever warm up drills you like at the bar change after an hour.

I have heard pit-side discussions of possible changes to the NFHS run through policy over the years, but that's about as far as it has gone.
If anyone has any real workable suggestions, your coach or AD can submit a change proposal to the NFHS for review. Something should be
done considering some meets have 40 and 50 vertical jumpers in their event. Those at the bottom of the order or have passed a height or two or three have agonizingly long waits.

Here's the link to buy the NFHS rule book. It is only $6.95.
Buy a bunch of them and pass them out. You should have on in your pocket or track bag at all times. That thing has come in so handy at so many meets. You'd be supprised how many good coaches don't know the rules.
