Laurent confirms US#1 ranking

by Elliot Denman, NSSF

Rachel Laurent of Vanderbilt Catholic High School/Houma,
Louisiana came in as the national leader (with a 13-9 ¼ at the
Louisiana state meet) and solidified her status as America’s
number one with a 13-8 ½ clearance for the gold medal.

The nation’s 2-3-4 ranked vaulters came to Landover, too,
and proved their credentials once again.

Easton, Pa.’s Abby Schaffer took the silver at 13-2 ½ (a PR and Pennsylvania state record), and while Shade Weygandt of Mansfield, Texas and Stephanie Norman of Norman, Arkansas were sailing 12-8 ¾, the third spot was going to Weygandt on fewer misses.

Mechanicsville’s Emma DeJarnette and Lafayette’s Kathryn
Barousse cleared 12-2 ¾ to top the morning flight and wound
up fifth and seventh, respectively, on the misses rule.

Neither Palo Alto, Californian Tori Anthony’s national record
of 14-2 ½ in 2007 or Lancaster, or New Yorker Mary Saxer’s
NIN meet record of 14-2 in 2005 were under threat.

The triumph assured, Laurent had the bar upped to 13-8 ½
but thrice fell short.

They misprinted the hieght, it was actually 13'6". It would have been an illegal progression move to go to 13'8.5". Good job though Rachel!

Once you start going at a 4 inch progression you cant go back to a 6 inches progression unless its only 1 competitor that made it.
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph
