Matt Butcher signed to run track at the University of Oregon, Elizabeth Stover signed with Purdue University and Beau Brittenham will play football and run track at the Air Force Academy.

Butcher and Stover, who each set Class 4A state records last season as juniors, will compete for a couple of the top track and field programs in the nation.

Stover also made her decision relatively early. It came down to Purdue and Indiana, but in the end, it was Purdue’s engineering program that set it apart. Its No. 24 ranking in the nation didn’t hurt, either.

Stover, 4A’s two-time defending champion in the pole vault, said she has a goal of competing in the 2012 Olympics. Butcher said the Olympics and running professionally are certainly long-term goals, but that’s not why he does it.

Also at Easton, state wrestling champion Jordan Oliver signed with Oklahoma State, softball star Allison Hartzell with Rhode Island and state pole vault champion Abby Shaffer with Virginia Tech.

To get the juices flowing, there's nothing like a big football game in front of 10,000 screaming fans or a championship basketball game that has them hanging from the rafters.

Those special events are what garner the lion's share of attention when it comes to high school athletics.

But the most meaningful, most treasured moments are the ones held in a much more intimate settings, like the ones I witnessed on Wednesday morning.

In a small meeting room near the principal's office at Bethlehem Catholic, Linda McDermott beamed with obvious and deserved pride as her twins, daughter Kerry and son Mike, made their college futures known on Signing Day.

Kerry, a track standout, is headed to Cornell; Mike is set for the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he'll play football.

''They're both hard workers, great students and great athletes,'' Mrs. McDermott said. ''They've been a joy. They've been competitive with each other their whole lives, but in a good way. They've pushed and motivated each other to excel.

''As parents, we only expected them to do the best they can. If the best they could be was 'B' students, we would have accepted that, but they pushed each other to become 'straight-A' students and now they're both going on to some great places.''

This is the one day where the worlds of athletics and academics beautifully converge in the form of a dotted line that either earns deserving kids full scholarships, or, at least, a considerable discount off the ticketed price of a quality college education.

It's the day that all of the hard work on the field and in the classroom is rewarded.

The McDermotts, who live in Stewartsville, N.J., were happy to have a combined ceremony.

''It's great to share this with Kerry,'' said Mike, a 6-7, 250-pound two-way linemen at Becahi who who will play either on the offensive line or tight end. ''It's like a dream come true. We've always been good friends besides brother and sister. We both do track and she's been my running buddy. And we kind of went through this process together.

''There has been a little sibling rivalry, but it's helped us. We motivate each other. I used to get higher grades than her when we were younger, but she began booking down and passed me. My father [Bart] has always encouraged the two of us to compete, but in a good way.''

Kerry is ranked fifth in Becahi's senior class, Mike 13th.

Kerry is also the defending 2A state champ in the pole vault and won four District 11 medals last spring (pole vault, 300 hurdles, 4x400 relay team and long jump), but she's just as proud of her academic standing.

''It's something I really worked hard for,'' she said. ''That's why I'm going to Cornell. … for the amazing academics. And they have a very good track program.''

Franklin County's Erin Patterson has made an oral commitment to sign a partial track and field scholarship with Virginia.

Patterson set a Northwest Region record in the pole vault in 2007 when she cleared 11 feet, 3 inches. She went on to place fifth in the VHSL Group AAA meet and was named first-team All-Timesland.

Classmate Mitchell Erickson, the defending Class AA pole vault champ, signed to compete in track and field with Oklahoma. He said winning a state title as a junior helped his stock go up. He had been considering Florida, Virginia Tech, Auburn and Washington.

"I think winning (state) proved I could compete in the big time and people took notice," Erickson said. "We had four kids in Illinois go over 16 feet and it shows what a good state this is for pole vaulting."

Erickson won with a vault of 16-9. He said by signing, he can work on his vaulting and not worry about height.

"I am trying some new poles and a new grip," he said. "I can concentrate on some things individually and not worry."

Ryun Godfrey announced the singings of three athletes to national letters of intent Wednesday
FARGO, N.D.—North Dakota State head women’s track and field coach Ryun Godfrey announced Wednesday the signings of three athletes to national letters of intent. Leslie Brost, Brittany Page and Kalie Cox, all of Watertown, S.D., will compete for the Bison during the 2008-09 track and field seasons.

"We are very pleased to have joining us these outstanding student-athletes, all from Watertown High School," Godfrey said. "The fact that they are from my alma-mater is certainly icing on the cake. Brittany, Kalie and Leslie will make immediate impacts with Bison track and field."

NDSU will make its first appearance in The Summit League for both indoor and outdoor competition this season. For the past three years, the Bison have competed in the independent outdoor championships and claimed team titles in both 2006 and 2007.

Listed below are some notes on each of the women’s track and field signings for North Dakota State:

LESLIE BROST Watertown, S.D. (Watertown H.S.)
State champion in the pole vault in 2006 and 2007...State record holder in the event...Currently is ranked fifth among high school athletes in the United States in the pole vault...Ran a leg on the state championship 4x400-meter relay in 2007...Selected the 2007 Gatorade Athlete of the Year...Also is an all-state gymnast and a member of the 2006 state championship team...Member of the Dean’s list...Daughter of Bryan and Teri Brost.
