Re: High School Vaulting in the Rain
Well said - Don't vault in the rain. As an official I will hold up or cancel the event if raining. If over ruled by the field ref. I will decline to officiate. I don't want to see an athlete hurt, and I don't want to try to explain in court why I thought it was a good idea to continue vaulting in t...

I am not sure she had her 4.75-4.85 poles ready for this meet; next time she will have to check with her supplier further ahead of time (and I bet they will be listening)

She will not be on scholarship as a freshman, but could earn one later. She turned down academic scholarship offers from Minnesota and the Colorado School of Mines. A 12'9.50 girl walking on? Now THAT is recruiting! Nate Davis is a coach worth walking on for, he has helped Jenny Soceka reach the ne...

Re: HS Rule Change for 2011 - 2 Min Warmup instead of 1 Run Thru
It should be in effect now if your meet is being run under NFHS rules. You should definitely try to get your own copy of the current NFHS rule book. It's worth the money for any pole vault coach. I do have a rule book, one shows up in my school mailbox every year :) . This came up at a meet and the...

Re: A strange way to run a HS pole vault event
I just looked at the big meet at Linfield College (Oregon) this coming weekend and it says that it has a max 3 jumps and top 8 go to finals. So it looks like they are employing the same rules! It sounds like they copied the rules for the throws and horizontal jumps, possibly without thinking. I hav...

Re: May 9, 2009 Weekend Results
Soceka cleared 4.25 cleanly on her first attempt and looked reasonably good at 4.35 (the WC "B" height). Galiart, who has a 4.30 PR is from The Netherlands and was using a shorter run than her normal/PR and seemed reasonably happy with her performance. I was the official and 4.13 is the hi...

They used an electronic measuring device. I took a look at it and if memory serves me right, it read 4.124 meters. Well, that's within spec for a 4.12 jump. Probably the person doing the electronic measurement did not have the beam at the true bottom the of bar hence the beam might be a little on t...

He did indeed get the 4.12 clearance (and there was margin in the measurement). He actually took three decent vaults at 4.27 and if the initial height sequence had been followed he might have made 4.20. I had a VERY close view of the vault! :) He also helped with the vault officiating (womens prior)...

One interesting (and irritating) thing that I think you've noticed is that there are meets where the competition is in imperial units but then 11'6" gets reported the next day as something like 11'5 and some fraction. I find that kids coming from HS are not very familiar with metric, but a couple o...
