Bubka was far from automatic. The media and non-pv track fans always gave him much more credit for his "consistency" than he truly deserved. He was a great pole vaulter - the best ever, but he did not jump high every day and was never "automatic".

Even if Jenn had not entered, they could have decided to take all 13 girls who cleared 4.50 and only make Jenn jump at 4.55, take 14 if she cleared. Isn't that what used to happen with Isinbayeva? I don't recall a Q round ever being shut down early just because they were "close enough to 12 an...
